Teaching with Alabama Authors

This collection offers a complete, ready-to-teach course on Alabama authors, shared freely for instructors, students, and anyone interested in the state’s literary history. It was developed for a 2000-level Southern Studies course at Auburn University. The syllabus, lectures, and assignments can be used together as a full semester or drawn on separately.

The materials include:

  • the course syllabus and semester schedule
  • two curriculum units: “Exploring Alabama Authors in Southern Literature” and “Introduction to Geospatial Modeling Using the Alabama Authors Literary Map”
  • a lecture series with slides on thirteen Alabama authors
  • GIS-based literary mapping presentations and assignments
  • assignments in archival literacy, digital humanities methods, and public scholarship, with supporting materials and assessments

Companion digital exhibits on individual authors, built on the exhibit framework developed for this project, appear in the AL Author Exhibits section. New notes, videos, and slide decks introducing more of our authors will be added here as they are completed.

Dr. Beverley Park Rilett designed and directed the project, and graduate research assistant Emilee Brown developed the course materials. Auburn University’s Daniel F. Breeden Endowed Grant Program, administered by the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, funded Emilee’s work. What began as a proposal for two curriculum units grew into the full course presented here.
