Interactive Literary Map of Alabama

Welcome to our interactive literary map of Alabama.

The Alabama state map is divided into its counties. Click on a county to learn about the  Alabama authors who lived there and the connections they had to those places. Information such as birthplace, site of death, adult residency, and educational institution is available for all the authors currently listed on Alabama Authors of the 19th & 20th Centuries website.

The counties are further color-coded in heat-map format; the depth of color relates to the number of authors, with the darkest blue counties having the most.

Our interactive map uses the Neatline platform to partially recreate the literary map that was featured on This Goodly Land, an inspiring foundational website developed by digital scholarship librarian Midge Coates and her team at Auburn University Libraries from 2005-2011. In spring of 2023, graduate assistant Zion McThomas added place-based information to the authors' bios we had been collecting since 2022. In fall of 2023, research assistants Corey McDaniels and Kevien Shelton verified and categorized the information at the county level and used the open-source Neatline platform to display the map. We'll be adding more than 1,000 additional Alabama Authors of the 19th & 20th Centuries over the next two years.
