Author Biography

Thaddeus Constantine Willis Brewer was born in Brewerville, Sumter County, Georgia. His early career began in a printing office at the young age of fourteen, and just three years later, he was already editing a newspaper in Milton, Florida. Despite attempting to enlist in the Army during the Civil War, health issues prevented him from serving actively. However, he contributed administratively, including roles as an enrolling officer and deputy provost marshal. During Reconstruction, Brewer became a prominent newspaperman and a key figure in Democratic politics. In 1865, he completed his legal studies but chose to pursue a career in journalism instead. As editor of the Wilcox Times in Camden, Wilcox County, he staunchly opposed the Reconstruction policies of the Republican Party. Later, his newspaper, the Hayneville Examiner, advocated for a return to a political system based on white supremacy and run by and for white men. Brewer used his platform to praise conservatives who sought to deny voting rights to African Americans and white Republicans. Brewer's influence extended beyond the press. He served as State Auditor from 1876 to 1880 and held positions in both the Alabama House of Representatives (1880–1882, 1890–1894) and the Alabama Senate (1882–1890). Additionally, he represented Alabama's Fifth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1896 to 1901. Brewer passed away in 1912.
