Author Biography

John William Beverly was born in Hale County, Alabama. He pursued his education at Lincoln Normal School, earning his B.S. in 1882, and later obtaining a Ph.D. from Brown University in 1894. From 1882 to 1884, Beverly served as principal of Tullibody Academy in Greensboro, Alabama. Subsequently, he taught at Lincoln Normal School, where he became the assistant principal in 1894. Even after the school's relocation to Montgomery and its transformation into the Alabama Normal School for Colored Students in 1888, Beverly continued to contribute significantly. In 1915, he became the institution's first Black president. From 1920-1922, Beverly was dean of Alabama State Normal School. Following his tenure in Alabama, Beverly served as an instructor of English and history at Prairie View College in Texas until his passing in 1924. Notably, his book, History of Alabama for Use in Schools, is the first history of Alabama written by an African American author.
